Atlas, in Greek mythology, is the son of the Titan Iapetus and the Oceanid Clymene and brother of Prometheus (creator of humanity). In Homer's Odyssey, he appears to have been a sea creature that held up the pillars separating heaven from earth. They were thought to lie in the sea immediately beyond the westernmost horizon. However, his name was later transferred to a mountain range in northwestern Africa.

Atlas was later depicted as the king of this district, turned into a rocky mountain by the hero Perseus, who, to punish him for his inhospitality, showed him the head of the Gorgon, whose sight turned men to stone. According to Hesiod's Theogony, Atlas was one of the Titans who took part in the war against Zeus, for which he was condemned to hold up the sky. In many works of art, he was depicted as bearing the sky or the celestial globe (in Hellenistic and Roman art).
