The Corinthian order owes its name to the Greek city-state of Corinth, to which it was linked at the time. However, according to architecture historian Vitruvius, the column was created by the sculptor Callimachus, likely an Athenian, who designed acanthus leaves growing around a votive basket.

The Corinthian order is the youngest of the three main classical orders of ancient Greek and Roman architecture. The other two are the Doric, which was the earliest order, followed by the Ionic order. When classical architecture was revived during the Renaissance, two more orders were added to the works: the Tuscan order and the Composite order. The Corinthian is, along with the Composite, the most sculpted of the orders. It's characterized by thin fluted columns and elaborate capitals decorated with acanthus leaves and scrolls. There are, however, many variants.
