The Winged Victory of Samothrace is one of the most famous, yet also most intriguing works held at the Louvre Museum. The sculptor's name, the work's date, and the origin of this stunning depiction of Nike, the Greek goddess of Victory, captured in a triumphant gesture, remain unknown and much debated. The piece was discovered in 1863 on the Greek island of Samothrace. In 1883, the sculpture was installed in its current location on the Daru staircase of the Louvre, where visitors continue to marvel at this monumental Hellenistic masterpiece.

Its origin is believed to be the winged goddess of Victory, standing at the prow of a ship, overlooking the Sanctuary of the Great Gods on the island of Samothrace. This monument was likely a votive offering from the people of Rhodes commemorating a naval victory in the early 2nd century BC. The theatrical pose, vigorous movement, and flowing drapery of this Hellenistic sculpture combine with references to the Classical period, foreshadowing the Baroque aesthetics of the Pergamon sculptors.
