Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810-1879) was a French sculptor. He's considered one of the pioneers of animal sculpture in the 19th century. Mêne made numerous animal sculptures, mainly domestic animals including horses, cows and bulls, sheep and goats, which were fashionable under the Second Empire.

Mêne specialized in small bronze figures, which explains why none of his works exist as a public statue. His work was a popular success among the bourgeois class, and many editions of each sculpture were made, often to decorate a growing number of private homes of the era. The quality of his works is incredible.

Copies of Mêne's works can be found around the world, notably in museums such as the Ashmolean in Oxford, the Louvre, the Metropolitan, and the R.W. Norton Art Gallery in Los Angeles.
