Athena, identified with Minerva in Roman mythology, was portrayed as having a calm temperament, slowly growing into anger. It's said she only fought for just causes, and never without purpose. In ancient Greek literature, Athena is described as the clever companion of heroes and as the patron Goddess of heroic effort. Athena likely takes her name from the city of Athens, of which she was the patroness. In the Greek world, she was worshipped as the city's protector.

She was the daughter of Zeus, born without a mother, emerging fully grown from her father's forehead. There's another story that Zeus swallowed Metis, the Goddess of counsel, while she was pregnant with Athena, so Athena ultimately emerged from Zeus. As Zeus's favorite child, she held great power. As a war goddess, Athena could not be dominated by other goddesses, like Aphrodite, and as a palace goddess, she could not be violated.
