Leonidas, (died 480 BC), was the King of Sparta. His stand against the invading Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece is one of the great tales of Greek heroism. He's invoked in Western history as the embodiment of bravery shown against all odds.
Leonidas succeeded his half-brother, Cleomenes I, as king, probably in 490. He was married to Gorgo, Cleomenes's daughter.
